Vaginal Rejuvenation Q & A

Why has my vaginal function changed over the years?

All of the tissues and organs within your body will change over time. Your reproductive tissues are no exception, and it is perfectly normal to notice changes in vaginal function and feeling as the years pass.

Vaginal laxity is one of the most common changes. This occurs when the tissue in your vagina loses tone. It can make your vagina feel less tight than before and can change the way sex feels.

Changes in vaginal lubrication are also common. When your vaginal tissues produce less moisture, friction increases during sex, which can lead to discomfort. Many women find that vaginal dryness causes discomfort even during normal daily activities.

Your labia can also change as you grow older, becoming elongated or taking on a different size or shape. This can make it uncomfortable to wear your favorite underwear or even to engage in walking or other forms of exercise.

What causes vaginal changes?

Many women experience vaginal changes after pregnancy and childbirth. Your vaginal and surrounding tissues have the ability to stretch during childbirth and then recover quickly. However, having a large baby or multiple births can take a toll on these tissues, leading to changes that negatively impact your enjoyment of sex, urinary control, and daily comfort level.

The aging process is also responsible for changes in vaginal tissues. Declining hormone production can lead to vaginal atrophy and vaginal dryness. Over the years, your skin loses much of its natural collagen, which serves to plump and tone your skin. These changes cause wrinkles and lines on your face, as well as changes in the tightness and tone of your vaginal tissues.

A condition called lichen sclerosus can affect your genital and anal areas. It can cause patches of white skin that can itch, bleed, or blister. These areas often become painful and can interfere with your normal daily routines.

What is vaginal revitalization?

Vaginal revitalization is a term used to describe treatments that restore healthy vaginal function. There are several options to choose from, and Dr. Riftine can help you decide which treatments are right for you.

VotivaⓇ is a non-invasive radiofrequency treatment that prompts your body to rebuild collagen tissues in and around your vaginal tissues. Votiva improves blood flow, strengthens muscle tissue, and reduces pain and sensitivity in the treatment area.

The O-ShotⓇ is a treatment that uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to promote cellular changes. PRP is created from a small sample of your own blood and helps activate stem cells to regenerate tissue. Results take a few weeks to develop, and subsequent treatment can boost results even further.

Surgical procedures like labiaplasty and vaginoplasty can help tighten tissues that have changed over time. These procedures offer cosmetic benefits as well as functional improvements.
